Just listening to the excellent Football Weekly podcast by The Guardian talking about the Johnstones Paint Trophy Final tomorrow and found myself getting excited at the prospect of certain Conference sides, including those relegated from the Football League the previous season, taking part in it. How desperate am I?

  • A Good Reason To Avoid The Conference - I must be a visual learner as a thread on Red Passion moved me to make the rather dodgy home made map you can see above. The black dots show the teams that would be in The Conference next season if the season ended today and the second placed teams won the play-offs. We’ll certainly be racking up the miles, although I suppose London Reds will get a chance to see a few more games!!! The red dots are the sides in the relegation places-typically the only sides that are fairly local are going… Read A Good Reason To...
  • Scouting Mission - Yesterday’s FA Trophy Final was a chance to see what decent Conference sides are like, and it made me feel a little nervous. I’ve spent most of my football watching life looking at teams we’re going to have to play against, either on TV or live, and I naturally try to imagine what we’d do against them. The Ebbsfleet-Torquay was contested by two decent sides who, in the past, I’d have felt we had a fair chance of beating. That was the past now-last season we had to watch a Wrexham side like… Read Scouting Mission at Marks Wrexham...

  • Tortured Maths - I don’t usually see much point in trying to predict runs of matches to see how a league table will end up; recent results at the bottom of League Two show why that’s a mug’s game! However, I’m so desperate to see us somehow dig ourselves out of this mess that I feel a need to work out the likely results the other sides will achieve, just to see if I really do believe we can make it, so here goes. Assuming we beat our rivals in the big head-to-heads, as we surely have to in order to survive,…...
  • What an Opportunity - An interesting article in the Non League Paper on Sunday illustrated the unsettled nature of the Conference this season. Eleven teams have been top of the table already this season-that’s twice as many as the total for the last two seasons combined! Furthermore, Crawley are the only side to last more than two weeks in the top spot! If ever there was a season where you could safely say that any team which strings a run together will win the league, this is it. Hope it’s us!! Read What an Opportunity at Marks Wrexham FC Blog ...

  • Borough Better Than You Think - No Wrexham fan expects us to swan into the Conference and sweep everything before us-two years of awful football have taught us not to have grand aspirations! Ironically, the 5-0 beating of the pre-season title favourites last Saturday has only reinforced that sense of respect for the Blue Square Premier. Stevenage might have defended poorly, but their approach play was superior to virtually anything we saw in League Two last season. Their commitment to keeping the ball on the floor was… Read Borough Better Than You Think at Marks Wrexham FC Blog ...
  • We Might Go Up A Place!! - I know it’s a touch desperate, but we might go up a place in the Conference without kicking a ball! The season starts here! Alright, I’ll drop the sarcasm, but there could be real upheaval in the table if Mansfield are docked points for fielding an ineligible player in Aaron O’Connor. They gained eight points in the games he played before the matter was addressed, so if the usual precedent is followed they’d lose them and the table would look like this. However, an interesting article in Non… Read We Might Go Up A Place!! at Marks Wrexham FC...
  • Spann the Fans’ Favourite! - Wrexham’s fans have come under a lot of scrutiny in recent weeks, particularly over their anger at Brian Little and his side in the latter days of his time in the Racecourse hot seat. So it was nice at Mansfield to see the magnificent part they played in another enjoyable day. Obviously the sheer number of away fans we took was impressive-how many other sides will take five hundred to an away Conference game this season? But for me the most memorable aspect of their support was their treatment… Read Spann the Fans’ Favourite! at Marks Wrexham FC Blog...
  • Waiting For Evo - So we might find out what’s going to happen with Steve Evans soon. Or perhaps not. It feels odd to not really be all that bothered. I always thought a side which is relegated to the Conference would have a nightmare trying to hang onto its talent, so it seems strange to feel fairly ambivalent about whether a current international should stay or not. That’s were I am over this though. I guess it’s the fact that Evans has made too many mistakes this season. As Brian Little says, he has all… Read Waiting For Evo at Marks Wrexham...
